Eddie Vedder, on why some musicians avoid addressing substantial or controversial subject matter: ”I think it goes back to what Howard [Zinn] was saying about being safe. One thing about The People Speak is that you can’t help but be inspired by these people who have fought so hard, literally with their lives on the line, in much more dire circumstances than what we’ve been through … [Musicians who speak out] do get criticized, and you might not sell as many records or you might lose a certain audience, or you might have people in the audience saying, ‘Just shut up and sing.’ Literally I’ve heard this said: ‘He played that antiwar song, he could have played a B side.’ They were frustrated that I wasn’t playing some innocuous song, and this was at a time when it was very important—and it still is very important … Howard, and knowing him for the last decade, has really kept me hopeful, and hopefully the songs [I’ve written] haven’t just been complaints and arguments.”

"On the night of January 28, 1968 in Las Vegas, Nevada.  Jim Morrison was arrested at the Pussycat a’ Go Go for public drunkenness and vagrancy.  Apparently, Jim was beat up by the bouncers because he was smoking a cigarette like it was a joint.  One of the bouncers hit Jim over the head with a billyclub which caused Jim’s head to bleed.  Chaos ensued and the cops arrived and Jim was arrested.  On the ride to the station and while being booked, Jim was livid and incited the cops who threatened to beat him up after their shift ended.”
